Cirque du Soleil

Hello Division 19,

Wow, what an amazing parent turnout for our presentation today.  The students were so excited and a little bit nervous to perform for all of you.  I could tell they were nervous at the beginning because they were all hiding in the back of the gym!  But they got more comfortable as the performance went on.

I loved working with the children in the gym this year.  We did all sorts of neat stuff.  For our Cirque presentation my favorite part has always been the hoop portion.  I loved watching them use the hoops in many ways and hold different balance poses.  I think the students’ favorite part was either juggling or using the mats.

Thank you again for coming today.

Please remind your child to send a couple of bags to school tomorrow.  It is clean up day!  And our last official day will be Thursday. Students will be dismissed at 11:00.

See you,

Mme Rode

Growing Chefs and our new PE unit

Hello Division 19,

Yesterday we had an amazing day.  We had our second Growing Chefs lesson.  It was so much fun.  Each table group brainstormed ways to care for our garden and 5 rules for our garden.  As well, we played a vegetable guessing game.  We were able to guess the names of 10 out of 13 vegetables.  The chefs did trick us though.  We thought one of the vegetables was broccoli and it was actually broccolini (a vegetable that is a close cousin, it is a combination of broccoli and kale).  There were 2 types of mushrooms that looked very different.  One was a honey or beach mushroom and the other was a King Oyster mushroom.  After the game, we all got to sample the vegetables.  Everyone loved the vegetable samples!

We didn’t get a chance to plant with the chefs yesterday because we were so busy.  They will be coming back next Tuesday to transplant our beans and peas because they have been growing like crazy.  We will plant our seeds next Tuesday with the chefs.

As well, we started our new PE unit.  As you all know, I love trying out new and interesting things in the gym.  We are doing a gymnastics unit, but very untraditionally.  We are going to use the theme of “Cirque du Soleil” to explore different movement techniques.  Yesterday, we started our first lesson.  We were doing the “Russian Bars”.  Please check out the Youtube clips here to see an example of the Russian Bars.  We used lines on the floor and did movements and jumps while maintaining our balance.

I absolutely love Cirque du Soleil.  The gymnasts/acrobats/artists are unbelievable to watch.  We will be doing different “cirque” themes every Tuesday in the gym and will try and tie it together to make a little presentation.  Stay tuned…..

See you,

Mme Rode
